While I wasn’t the hugest fan of the original release of SpellForce III, it wasn’t a terrible game. I think there are better games in the genre, but I don’t begrudge any fans the game has. It had a very healthy DLC tail too, with sizable expansions and patched to the core game, so honestly it might be a great game now. Sadly, zero of this carries over to the console port.

Your quest will start by way of the Prologue set before the Mage Wars as you take control of General Sentenza Noria, Commander of the Wolf Guard. Rumor has it that a group of rebels is planning to overthrow the Crown and that they’ve currently taken refuge in a deserted castle in the wilds of Iskander. A mage by the name of Isamo Tahar is their leader, a charismatic but radical individual. You must do whatever it takes to defeat them before it’s too late. This is the game’s tutorial, which you’ll have to complete before your adventure can begin… as the son of Isamo Tahar!

This is a game whose great setting of a medieval era with fantastic touches. Now the title has been given improvements both in the adaptation for console controls and in its renewed interface to make it more intuitive. Besides, it also comes with the Soul Harvest and Fallen God expansions.

Where Spellforce III comes into its own, for better and worse, is when you reach certain missions where the RTS elements take over completely. Like many RTS, you’ll need to manage resources, construct buildings, make more troops, all while exploring and expanding the map while also defending your base. To even begin you’ll need to construct buildings and assign workers to find wood, stone and food. Thankfully they’ll automatically go find the nearest nodes within the area you’ve captured, slowly filling your banked resources. Of course building anything takes your precious resources, as does making new units for your army, and doing so well will require you to explore the map and capture other regions and nodes so you can expand and build even further.

You can also decide the difficulty for the Campaign Mode between the four different choices: Easy, Normal, Hard, and Circle Mage. Easy allows you to focus on the story, with combat that is less challenging and heroes that are revived more often. Normal is the standard experience that the developers set out to deliver for the Campaign Mode. Hard is reserved for seasoned gamers who have experience with RTS games since any mistakes made along the way will cost you. Circle Mage dials things up to 11, so you’ll have to make the most of how you optimize your characters to be able to survive.

SpellForce 3 Reinforced is a very enjoyable title that takes us to a medieval land that can rival Tolkien in terms of its universe. Its combination of RTS and RPG is well done without one genre interfering with the other. This console version does a good job although the controls will be complex until we get used to it.
